How to get here
The Dicecca Dairy is located in Altamura (BA), in the heart of the Apulian Murgia. Baby Dicecca is nestled in the Mercadante Forest, in Cassano delle Murge—about 13 km from Altamura, accessible only by car.
By car
From Bari: Take the SS96 towards Altamura. The distance is approximately 45 km, with an estimated travel time of 45–50 minutes. Enter “Dicecca Dairy, Via Bari 26, Altamura” into your navigation system.
From Matera: Altamura is approximately 20 km from Matera, with a travel time of about 20–25 minutes via the SS99. It’s an excellent base for visiting the Sassi.
From Brindisi: Approximately 120 km via the SS379 and the motorway link, with a travel time of approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.
From Naples/Rome: Take the A16 (Naples–Canosa) or the A1 to Taranto, then follow the signs for Altamura.
For Baby Dicecca (Mercadante Forest): From the Dicecca Dairy in Altamura, follow the signs for Cassano delle Murge. Baby Dicecca is located within the Mercadante Forest, about 13 km away (a 15–20 minute drive). GPS address: Baby Dicecca, Mercadante Forest, 70020 Cassano delle Murge (BA). ⚠️ Baby Dicecca can only be reached by car—it is not served by public transport.
By train
Altamura station is served by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL), with direct connections from Bari and Matera.
From Bari Centrale (FAL): Departure from Bari Centrale FAL station. Duration: approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. Frequent services Monday to Saturday. Ticket: approximately €4–6. Updated timetables at ferrovieappulolucane.it.
From Matera: Direct FAL connection Matera–Altamura, duration approximately 30 minutes. Services approximately every hour, Monday to Saturday. Always check the timetable on the FAL website before departing: the route is subject to seasonal variations due to line modernization work.
⚠️ Altamura FAL station is located in the city center. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the dairy (Via Bari 26). Please note that Baby Dicecca cannot be reached by train: once in Altamura, for experiences that include a transfer to the forest, you will need a taxi or rental car.
By bus
From Bari / Bari Airport (BRI) → Altamura The COTRAP/Sitabasilicata service connects Matera, Altamura, and Bari Palese Airport with multiple trips daily. The Altamura stop is on Via Santeramo in Colle, on the corner of Via R. Scotellaro (opposite the Church of the Transfiguration).
Departures from Bari Airport to Altamura (timetables effective August 4, 2025, always check for updates): 9:15 AM — 11:30 AM — 1:40 PM — 3:00 PM — 6:30 PM — 9:30 PM — 12:30 AM
Travel time from the airport to Altamura: approximately 50 minutes. Tickets start at approximately €3 and can be purchased online or via the COTRAP Itineris app.
From Bari Centrale → Altamura: Approximately 10 buses per day, with a travel time of approximately 50–55 minutes. Operators: COTRAP, Sitabasilicata, and Sita Sud.
By plane
The nearest airport is Bari “Karol Wojtyła” (BRI), located approximately 8–10 km from Bari city center and approximately 45 km from Altamura (40 minutes by car).
From Bari Airport to Altamura, there are three options:
By rental car — the most convenient option, especially if you’re participating in the Cheese Experience (which includes a trip to Baby Dicecca). All major rental companies are located directly at the airport. Travel time: approximately 40 minutes via SS96.
By direct bus — the COTRAP service connects Bari Airport directly to Altamura (Via Santeramo in Colle stop). Travel time approximately 50 minutes, ticket €3. Schedules are available on the official COTRAP page or on cotrap.it.
By train (with a transfer in Bari) — From the airport, you can reach Bari Centrale FAL station in about 25–30 minutes with the Tempesta shuttle (€5, departures every 30 minutes), then take the FAL train to Altamura (about 1 hour and 10 minutes). Total time: about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Alternative airport: Brindisi (BDS) More suitable for those arriving from Northern Europe on low-cost flights. It is about 130 km from Altamura (~1 hour and 30 minutes by car). There are no direct bus connections between Brindisi and Altamura; you will need to rent a car.
